🎨 The Dopest Exhibition — Giants: Art from the Dean Collection
Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys have spent two decades building one of the most incredible private art collections in the world — 134 works spotlighting Black diasporic artists, including Gordon Parks, Amy Sherald, Nick Cave, Kehinde Wiley, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Mickalene Thomas. This is world-class art. And right now, it's in Indianapolis.
Let that land for a second. The kind of collection that lives in the pages of the New York Times and the walls of the Brooklyn Museum is currently at Newfields, right here in the Midwest. Organized by the Brooklyn Museum, Giants: Art from the Dean Collection unfolds across three powerful sections. "On the Shoulders of Giants" honors the legends who laid the foundation. "Giant Conversations" digs into how artists have critiqued the world — Nick Cave's textured sculptures examining how Black men must assume costumes to protect themselves against violence, Lorna Simpson's work on self-representation, Amy Sherald's large-scale diptych celebrating Baltimore dirt bike culture. "Giant Presence" closes with works so monumental in scale and theme they stay with you long after you leave.
This is the kind of show that reminds you Indianapolis is not a second-tier city. It never was. Go see it.
📍 Newfields, 4000 N Michigan Rd · Indianapolis
The Dopest Tip: Give this exhibition real time — not a quick lap between other things. Read the wall text. Sit with the work. This is the kind of show you'll be telling people about for a while.

💀 The Dopest Fall Experience — Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Dance Kaleidoscope — now in their 55th season, one of the Midwest's longest-running professional dance companies — has created Indianapolis's new fall tradition and it is not for the faint of heart. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a 75-minute immersive reimagining of Washington Irving's classic.
Think elaborate, atmospheric costuming that pulls you into the world of Ichabod Crane the moment you walk in. Haunting choreography that sets a tone of dread and beauty in equal measure. Cinematic storytelling where every movement feels like a scene from a film you can't look away from. This is the performance that signals fall has truly arrived in Indianapolis — and it arrives with ghouls, witches, and an atmosphere thick enough to feel in your chest. The content warning is not a formality. Recommended for ages 13 and up.
Performing at McGowan Hall October 2–4 and 9–11. Friday and Saturday shows at 7PM, Sunday matinees at 2PM. No intermission. Arrive early, get a drink, and let the space set the mood before the show even begins.
📍 McGowan Hall, 1305 N Delaware St · Oct 2–4 & 9–11 · Fri & Sat 7PM · Sun 2PM
The Dopest Tip: Do not skip the pre-show atmosphere. It's part of the experience.

🎬 The Dopest Film Festival — Heartland Film Festival
If you're still out here saying Indianapolis is boring or always behind the curve — we say this with love — you're just not participating. Because the Heartland Film Festival was just ranked the #1 Best Film Festival in the country by USA Today. It's been running right here since 1991. The world-class events exist right here! You just have to show up.
The 35th Heartland Film Festival runs October 8–18, presented by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at The Square, with 200+ screenings at venues across Indianapolis. World premieres, blockbuster sneak peeks, local Hoosier films, filmmaker Q&As, red carpet events, and awards presentations. Opening night is a world premiere of "Jimmy" at the Scottish Rite Cathedral — sold out, but get on the waitlist. The Indiana Spotlight pick "Method to the Madness" is a feel-good sports feature from a Carmel-based director worth tracking down on the schedule.
Film schedules and tickets dropped September 17th. Move fast — the good screenings fill up.
📍 Multiple venues across Indianapolis · Oct 8–18, 2026 ·
The Dopest Tip: Pick three or four screenings across the eleven days and make it a real festival experience. The filmmaker Q&As alone are worth the ticket — you'll leave knowing something you didn't before.
